StarTrail is an AI-native content studio producing AI live-action film & TV, AI animation, and AI commercials — delivering theatrical-grade imagery and character performance at a fraction of the timeline and cost of traditional production.
That sentence is easy to write and hard to earn. “AI” has become a label you can staple onto almost anything. So it's worth being precise about what we mean when we call ourselves AI-native — because it's the whole thesis of the company.
“AI-native” is not “we use AI tools”
Most studios that touch generative AI use it the way they'd use a new lens or a new plugin: a tool bolted onto an unchanged pipeline. The script, the shoot, the edit, the VFX — all the same, with a few AI-generated shots dropped in.
We started from the other end. StarTrail rebuilds the whole chain — from script to performance, shoot, and post — around what AI can actually do well, and engineers around what it does badly. The result isn't a faster version of the old pipeline. It's a different production model: one where a small team can hold a film to a theatrical standard, keep a character perfectly consistent across hundreds of shots, and ship serialized content on a schedule that traditional animation and film economics simply don't allow.
That's the difference between using AI and being built on it.
Three studio lines
Our work runs along three lines, each with its own craft and its own market:
- AI Live-Action Film & TV. We rebuild the shoot and post of live-action shorts and series with AI, delivering theatrical-grade imagery and performance while cutting timelines and cost dramatically.
- AI Animation. Industrialized production of premium animated series and features — with the stable character consistency and art direction that turn a one-off into serialized, ownable IP.
- AI Commercials / TVC. AI-driven brand commercials and product films with cinematic quality and an efficiency that reinvents how brand content gets made and launched.
The work, and the recognition
A thesis is only as good as what it ships. Our films have been recognized where it counts:
- Non-Player Consciousness (非玩家意识) — first place at the iQIYI Nadou AIGC Venture Summit, and the Most Commercially Promising Award at the Beijing International Film Festival's AIGC section.
- Knight Street No.9 (骑士街 9 号) — a national co-production with the China International Communications Group (CICG), with characters engineered for franchise life across publishing, toys, and education, and over 100 million cumulative plays on Ximalaya.
- The Beloved Concubine (爱妃不是妖) and Spirit Vessel 41 (器灵 · 41 号) — both selected at the iQIYI Nadou Venture Summit and the Beijing International Film Festival's AIGC section.
- The 1314th Encounter (第 1314 次偶遇) — winner of the AI Creative Award at the AAFF International Ark AI Film Festival.
And in 2026, the AI technology we build helped put a film into Chinese theaters — reported as the country's first AI-assisted feature to earn a theatrical release license. (We wrote about that milestone when it happened.)
Built on proprietary technology, not borrowed tools
Underneath the work is a stack we built ourselves — StarTrail Phoenix AI™: an AI performance system that drives character micro-expressions and acting detail while locking identity consistent across a production; an industrialized AI-imaging pipeline that turns footage-to-finished-film into a repeatable process with unified style and batch output; and a light-and-material reconstruction system that holds every frame to a theatrical-grade finish. (We go deep on the performance system in the next post — it's the part that's hardest, and the part that matters most.)
The people, and the backing
StarTrail was co-founded in 2025 by Michael Zhang (Co-Founder & CEO), a serial entrepreneur in media and entertainment, and Marisa Chearavanont (Co-Founder). The team is drawn from theatrical film and television, leading animation studios, and frontier AI labs. In April 2026, StarTrail completed an angel round led by Charoen Pokphand Group, with participation from a group of cultural and technology investors — capital aimed squarely at building an AI-native content engine for the global market. (What that capital is actually for.)
Why this matters now
For a century, premium screen content has been gated by cost and time. Great animation took years and armies. Great live-action took budgets most stories never get. That gate is what kept most ideas from ever becoming films.
AI doesn't remove craft from that equation — if anything, the craft moves up, into direction, performance, and taste. What it removes is the gate. An AI-native studio can take a story from script to theatrical-grade screen with a fraction of the people, time, and money — which means more stories get made, and more of them get to look like cinema.
That's the company we're building. Not a faster version of the old one — a new species.
